Anti-wrinkle injections are a medical treatment that use a purified protein called botulinum toxin (also known as Botox®) to block nerve impulses to the muscle, resulting in a “relaxed” effect. This treatment is commonly used on the upper face however it can be used on muscles in the face, neck and body. Anti-wrinkle treatments target the muscles that cause lines and wrinkles when they move. By reducing their movement, the skin looks smoother and existing lines can soften. The effect is not permanent, and results usually last around 3 to 4 months before the treatment needs to be repeated.

The most common areas of the face to be treated with botulinum toxin are frown lines, forehead wrinkles and crow's feet around the eyes. Anti-wrinkle injections work by targeting specific facial muscles responsible for creating lines and wrinkles when they contract. By temporarily relaxing these muscles, movement is reduced, allowing the overlying skin to smooth and the appearance of lines to soften or, in some cases, disappear. During your anti-wrinkle treatment tiny amounts of botulinum toxin are injected into the muscles causing the unwanted wrinkles. The injections are made just beneath the skin and there is no downtime needed for recovery afterwards.

The initial effects of Botox® will show in the first 2-5 days. Peak effect on the muscle is at 14 days, but the result will continue to improve for 4 weeks or more. The benefits start to wear off after 3-4 months on average and therefore followup sessions are required every 3-4 months to maintain results.

All injections at Prestige Skin are administered by Abby Cornick, an NMC Registered Specialist Community Public Health Nurse and Midwife, in a safe, professional clinic environment accredited by Save Face - the only Government approved register for medical aesthetics.

This review appointment is included as part of your treatment plan and offered to all clients. Individual anatomy and muscle response can vary, so results may not always settle evenly. A two-week review allows us to assess the outcome once the treatment has fully taken effect and make any minor adjustments, if needed, to achieve the best possible result.

Like any medical treatment, Botox® has some possible risks and side effects. Most are mild and temporary, such as slight redness, swelling, or bruising where the injections were given. Some people may get a headache or feel tenderness for a short time. Less commonly, the treatment may cause temporary weakness in nearby muscles, which can affect facial expressions, for example a slight droop to the eyelid or eyebrow. Serious reactions are rare, but it’s important to tell your practitioner if you have any allergies, medical conditions, or are taking any medications so we can keep you safe.

There’s no actual downtime after Botox®, but for the first 24 hours you should avoid strenuous exercise, excessive heat or sweating, wearing tight headgear, and applying makeup to the treated area to reduce the risk of swelling or infection.

Everyone’s needs are different, and there are non-invasive treatments that can also support skin health and reduce signs of ageing. We’ll discuss all suitable options at your consultation. If you decide to go ahead with anti-wrinkle injections, you’ll be in safe hands. I use ultra-fine “Invisible Needles,” the smallest available, to make treatments as comfortable as possible. Since switching to these, clients often say the injections feel much gentler than with other practitioners. For extra comfort, you’re welcome to hold our friendly “Calma Llama” for distraction during the few minutes it takes. Each area usually involves around five tiny injections, and the procedure is over quickly. Even clients who are nervous about needles have had Botox® with me and happily return for repeat treatments – which I take as a great sign.

For three days before your anti-wrinkle treatment avoid alcohol and, if safe for you, consider pausing supplements or medications that can increase bruising, such as fish oil, vitamin E, and aspirin (only if approved by your GP). Stop using skincare products that can irritate the skin, such as retinoids, glycolic acid, or other strong exfoliants. On the day of treatment, arrive with clean skin free from makeup, and avoid intense exercise or heat immediately beforehand. Following these steps helps reduce the risk of bruising, swelling, or irritation and ensures your skin is in the best condition for treatment.

Yes. To help your results last as long as possible, follow your aftercare instructions, avoid rubbing or pressing on the treated areas, and protect your skin from sun damage by using SPF50 daily. Some research suggests that maintaining healthy zinc levels may help support the effectiveness of botulinum toxin, so a balanced diet or a suitable supplement may be beneficial. Keeping a healthy lifestyle and booking regular maintenance treatments will also help prolong your results.

I only use licensed brands of botulinum toxin that are sourced from UK-regulated pharmacies to ensure safety and quality. I primarily work with Botox® and Azzalure®, both well-established, medically approved products with a long history of safe and effective use.
